On December 10, 2016, FREESPACE hosted a screening of MILWAUKEE 53206 at The Jazz Gallery in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood. The event was organized by FREESPACE co-founder Vincent Gaa. Those in attendance ranged from Marquette University professors to local creatives to local youth. Rapper WebsterX (whose song “Doomsday” is featured in the ending credits of the film) spoke to the audience about growing up in 53206. Vincent stated, “The film captivated our audience; From what we observed, no one left, not even to use the restroom, while the film was on. It was truly an honor and a privilege to sponsor a screening of MILWAUKEE 53206.”
After the film was screened, rapper Reggie Bonds, Tyrone “DJ Bizzon” Miller, and film subject Chad Wilson shared their analyses with the audience. Vincent further stated that “the intimacy of our screening compelled audience members to raise their hands and ask if they too can share their truth. The dialogue around the film manifested beyond our wildest imaginations. We encouraged people to not end their conversations when our doors close and to go out and continue their dialogues and, furthermore, make an effort to engage your community and loved ones. FREESPACE’s mission states that our events aim to facilitate ‘art appreciation centered around literacy and love.’ The love is there, undoubtedly, and we are proud to say that our screening was a success, inspiring people in Milwaukee to rethink how they engage with themselves, their community, and the world at large.
